Notes:
This photograph is an example of active framing. In his book, The Nature of Photographs, Stephen Shore says of active framing, “The structure of the picture begins with the frame and works inward.” The larger world outside of the photograph is implied by the manner in which the frame “slices through the world.”
For a bit of fun and added complexity, I continued to work with perspective, a wide-angle lens (35mm equivalent), posing, and lighting. I had initially planned to convert the image to black and white since it’s easier to fudge any lighting issues that may arise. However, the photo looked better in color, so I made my first stab at altering the color palette. The lighting on the hand and chess piece still needs some work, but I ran out of time. Nonetheless, I am pleased with the image.
